Dance for A CureThe Lyric Theatre backs the Dance for a Cure to cervical cancerDance for a Cure, a dance production featuring some of South Africa’s leading dancers, is back at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino in August for the third consecutive year.
Gold Reef City Casino has proudly been supporting the campaign, which raises funds used in the fight against cervical cancer, since its inception three years ago. During Women’s Month in August, leading South African artists and fashion houses will create spectacular one-night-only concerts in Johannesburg and Durban. The production entitled Winds of Change will raise funds to vaccinate children against cervical cancer. The show will also serve as a platform to create awareness around cervical cancer and how it can be prevented. The performances promise to be dazzling: Act 1- dancers of different genres interpret sections of Astor Piazzolla’s magnificent Four Seasons (Cuatro Estaciones Portenas); Act 2-Dance Meets Fashion (dancers dressed by The Platinum Group: Jenni Button, Hilton Weiner, Vertigo, Aca Joe and Urban Degree) with live singers and musicians, directed by stellar choreographer Adele Blank. The show then culminates in the breathtaking grand finale. Featured dance companies (in Johannesburg) include KMAD, Moving Into Dance, Tribhangi Dance Theatre, Vuyani and Dance Junxion; and individuals such as Camille Bracher (now dancing with the Royal Ballet in London), Yolandi Olckers, Kitty Phetla and Mari-Louise Basson. Amongst the vocal artists are Michelle Veenemans, Dominique Paccaut, the Gaabo Tenors, Craig Urbani, Paul Abro, and Taryn Sudding, with musical director Paul Ferreira. The title and theme, Winds of Change, talks to both the changing seasons and to change initiating a positive shift. The events are the brainchild of Revelation – Dance for a Cure, a non-profit organisation which helps to supply a Nobel Prize-winning preventative vaccine to disadvantaged children. Revelation - Dance for a Cure has hosted annual performances since 2008 and has so far raised R1,008,780 which has facilitated the immunization of 580 orphaned girls. Winds of Change will be staged on 5 August at Durban’s Playhouse and on 13 August at Johannesburg’s, The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino at 7:30pm. Tickets cost R180 and are available through Computicket or at The Lyric Theatre box office on 011 248 5000.
