The Lyric at Gold Reef City has finally shaken off the dust and is thrilled to announce that The Bassline Series is back at our magnificent Lyric Theatre this May!
You can look forward to entertainment galore starting the Series off with:
8 May 2021 – Ami Faku & Urban Village
15 May 2021 – Msaki & Moonga K
22 May 2021 – Zoë & Zu
After a year-long hiatus, the Bassline Live at the Lyric Theatre is back. Bringing fans of real live music experience, exactly what they’ve been missing through the last year.
Bassline Live is reviving in the form of a three-concert series in the month of May. Starting off with SAMA Award Winner and The Voice SA finalist Ami Faku on the 8th of May, who will be supported by critically acclaimed Urban Village. Ami was named the most streamed female artist in SA by Deezer in 2020, so don’t miss out!
Second up in the series is Msaki on the 15th of May. This South African Music Award-nominated composer combines soulful folk with symphonic movements, Xhosa lyrics, and African poly-rhythms with portals of sincere improvisations. Her raw delivery will leave your senses disrupted, leaving you moved and quietly longing for more as she weaves subtle tales of love, loss, home, revolution, and hope.
She plays with an ever-evolving and expanding band of incredible musicians from different musical backgrounds she calls the Golden Circle. Msaki will be supported by the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised, Moonga K.
Third and last up in the series is Zoë on the 22nd of May supported by Zu. Born and raised in KwaZulu Natal, she is the quintessential artist who represents the present and future of South African music. Drawing from human experiences, identity, and storytelling, she creates a distinct sound to communicate a modern, evolving African story without losing its essence.
This series is supported by the National Arts Council’s Department of Sport, Arts & Culture’s PESP Stream 2 employment stimulus package. “We are breathing a sigh of relief and are excited to once again be doing what we love to do, and that’s live, quality, original, and proudly African music. ” Says Brad Holmes of Bassline Live!
” With the focus of this 3-concert series being development of the music industry and employment, Bassline has hand-picked artists who are seriously on the rise and some who are soon to be rising stars.
” Holmes explains. “In keeping with the Bassline’s long-standing relationships and shows with our South African Diva’s, since 1994, from Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Thandie Klaasen, Busi Mhlongo, Simphiwe Dana, Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai to the recently late Sibongile Khumalo, who have all graced our stages, from the Melville Jazz Club to the Newtown Concert Hall and over the past 4 years Live at the Lyric Theatre, Bassline will be continuing its support for our Divas by headlining three female songbirds who are all unique in their own right Ami Faku, Msaki & Zoë.” In support of these sisters of song are Urban Village and emerging artists Moonga K & ZU.
The venue will host 250 people per show as per Covid 19 safety regulations. Don’t forget your mask! The show starts at 19h30 but get here early due to COVID-19 screenings.
